I have a LOVE HATE relationship with Spring!

Geez! Abby's up, Abby's down, Abby's up up up, Abby's down down down, Abby is sometimes all over the place!
The weather is weird. One day it's beautiful, then it's raining, then it's cold and windy, never the same kind of weather two days in t a row.
I've been changing her carb ratios like I change my underwear! I'm not even going to attempt changing her basals just yet... what's the sense? I'm just going to have to change them back the next day.
I'm not ready to pull my hair out by any means, but it's frustrating. This is where you have to be vigilant or it can turn nasty quick.
We've been doing good with her activity in sports (soccer, gymnastics, and softball), not a low yet! (KNOCK ON WOOD). She's enjoying it, and meeting new friends. I'm going to try and post some photos soon.

I had no idea

Picture this in your mind.
It's a normal routine day, nothing is out of the ordinary. I've worked all day, and I've picked up Abby from daycare on my way home. We get home, put stuff away, do her homework together, change out of my work dress clothes, and I start making supper.
The TV is on in the background, Abby has her art supplies out sitting at the kitchen table, and she's doodling away. I'm at the stove I'm thinking about what I've got left to do yet tonight, what's on the schedule for tomorrow, whether or not the husband will be home in time for us to eat supper together, where my oldest child is tonight, just random thoughts in no particular order.
Supper appears done, so I ask Abby to start putting her stuff away so we can set the table, and would she test her blood sugar please? I get a response "I'm almost done Mom". I start taking out the plates, cups, silverware, and Abby comes over and hands me her drawing...

15

You wouldn't believe the list of people a Type1 diabetic child comes in contact with in one day. People that are alone with my child on a daily basis. Every one of these people has to know something about the disease to be able to care for her. Regardless of the situation they have to know what to do in an emergency.
Here is a list of people that deal with my child on a typical day...
1. Me (leaves for work in the morning first)
2. Dad (takes her to school)
3. School Administrative Assistant (drops diabetic kit off with her in the office)
4. Before School Recess Staff (next teacher in line to do recess duty)
5. Teacher
6. School Nurse
7. Morning School Recess Staff
8. Lunchroom Staff
9. Different Recess Duty Teacher
10. Librarian, PE, Art, Computer, Character Education, or Music Teacher
11. Reading Teacher (Kids divide up for their reading level)
12. Different Afternoon Recess Duty Teacher
13. After School Hallway Monitor
14. School Bus Driver or Daycare Van Driver
15. After School Program Teacher
Parent picks up the child
*15* different people have come into contact with my child just while I'm at work. And now I ask myself what do they know about Type1 diabetes? What would they do if my child were to fall to the ground and become unresponsive?! Now picture that just one of these people listed in a normal day was out sick, or had the day off.
Now imagine your child is involved in any type of activity or sport in the evenings or on the weekend.
1. Girl scouts
2. Dance
3. Gymnastics
4. Softball
5. Soccer
6. Swim Lessons
7. Karate
8. Sunday School
These are just to name a few of things my child has been involved in outside the home. This doesn't include Grandma & Grandpa's house, a neighbor calls to play, a birthday party invitation arrives, this list just feels endless!

Ankle

Tyler sprained his ankle pretty bad in May 08, of course it was the day before soccer district play offs. With the help of a FANTASTIC chiropractor and a professional ankle taping he still got to play. Tyler played well, not at his top speed, but soccer isn't all about speed.
Recently while at a friends house Tyler was going down the basement steps, and another friend was coming up the steps. Apparently his thinking was "I can't go around him, I can't go under him, I must go over him". So my son managed to jump over this other teenager and onto the basement landing. His ankle is now three times it's normal size. It isn't black or blue, just LARGE in size.
He's had an x-ray, adjusted at the chiropractor, and most recently to a Podiatrist and nothing is broken, fractured, or out of place. The swelling hasn't gone down much and I'm a little worried. He's been told to keep active and it will go back to normal, but it might take a while to get stronger.
